Abstract :

The activated carbon from the seeds of the Prosopis Juliflora has good adsorption capacity for the metal Zinc and it can be applied to the industrial waste for the removal of Zinc. With increase in concentration the percent removal decreases but the actual amount of the zinc adsorbed increases with equilibrium reaching at around 60mg per gram of the activated carbon. The adsorption of Zinc on the seeds of the activated carbon was very fast initially with most of the adsorption taking place in 30 minutes. Reactor can be designed to study the removal of the Zinc from industrial waste water since the time required for the removal was minimum. pH has profound effect on the removal of the Zinc from the solution. It was found that slightly alkaline pH is the ideal condition for the removal of the Zinc from the waste water by the activated carbon of the seeds of Prosopis Juliflora. Physical adsorption was found to be the main mechanism of the adsorption of the Zinc on the Prosopis Juliflora’s seed. As the temperature increases the percentage removal decreases which indicates the phenomenon of physical adsorption. Matrix effect was found to be minimum in the removal of the Zinc from the activated carbon of seeds of Prosopis Juliflora.
