Abstract :

Tannery (leather) industries make severe environmental problems particularly in terms of polluting organic effluent and hazardous solid waste as a result of the hides and skin processing. These wastes pose a major challenge to the environment. Hence, it is very important that tannery waste in the form of sludge should be managed in an environmentally sound manner. In Tamil Nadu, there are nearly 900 tanneries available, from which 10-15 tons of sludge is produced every day. The fly ash, lime and sand are mixed in the ratio of 1: 0.5: 3 to raise pH of the soil sample equal to the sludge sample. The soil sample thus prepared and the sludge sample are mixed in the various ratios such as 90: 10, 80: 20, 70: 30, 60: 40, and 50: 50. Now these samples are tested to find the strength determining its properties such as Sieve analysis test, standard proctor test, direct shear test and California Bearing Ratio test. . The interpreted was made among cohesion less soil and soil mixed with sludge. From the experimental results, the optimum combination between the sludge and the soil sample through the lab trials will be identified. From this study reveal that possible to be most economical option in the disposal of tannery sludge. This mixture can be used in filling the area between the footings in the load bearing structures and the sub base course in road pavements. Alternatively, this can also be utilized for the fabrication of pavement blocks
